Sylvia C. Lochbaum 

(November 25, 1928 – May 21, 2024)

Sylvia Marie (Chatt) Smith Lochbaum, 95, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2024, in Shelbyville Manor.

Visitation will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in Clarendon Hills Cemetery, Darien, IL.  Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL.  Memorials may be given to Shelbyville First United Methodist Church Food Pantry.

Sylvia was born on November 25, 1928, in Cicero, IL, the daughter of James Albert and Anna Rose (Jelinek) Chatt.  She graduated from Chicago Teacher’s College and later earned her master’s degree in education.  Sylvia was an eighth-grade teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, retiring in 1986.  She married Alwishes Smith, and he preceded her in death on March 2, 1989.   Sylvia was a member of Resurrection Parish Catholic Church in Illiopolis, IL. She later married Richard Lochbaum on September 16, 1993, and he preceded her in death on August 5, 2010. Sylvia shared many stories of growing up during hard times, teaching for 35 years, and traveling through Europe and Israel. Sylvia made friends at every turn of her life.  She enjoyed spending her last years loving her cabin in the woods, watching the birds, and spending time with her step-grandson, Jared.

Sylvia is survived by her stepson, Danny Lochbaum (Debbie) of Lakewood, IL; stepdaughter, Mary Ann Patton (Randy) of Cornersville, TN; several nieces and nephews, including Cathy Mitchell of Illiopolis, IL; step-grandchildren, Ed Patton, Jessica Gipson, Jill Park, and Jared Lochbaum; step-great-grandchildren, Katie Patton, Dylan Park, Devin Park, Karson Park, Danielle Lochbaum, Elizabeth Lochbaum, and Madison Gipson; and step-great-great-grandson, Oliver Jones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Alwishes Smith and Richard Lochbaum; and one sister, Anna Lessick.
