Max E Shanholtzer Jr.

Max E. Shanholtzer Jr., 75, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 6:16 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2019 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Gary Crowder officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday and 12:00-1:00 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Masonic rites will be held at 8:00 p.m. Saturday by Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 of Shelbyville. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Shelbyville Area Ambulance Service or Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Max was born on February 19, 1944 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Max Eugene, Sr. and Leona Mae (Harrington) Shanholtzer. He graduated from Eldorado High School in the Class of 1962. Max was a U. S. Army veteran and a member of Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81, Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 both of Shelbyville, IL and Shelby County Shrine Club. Max drove mini-stocks at Macon Speedway in Macon, IL for many years. He began working as the manager at Neal Tire in Shelbyville, IL. He later drove a tow truck and owned and operated Max’s Pool Hall and Max’s Recreation Center (Guns and Coins) all in Shelbyville, IL. Max was united in marriage to Gail Lynn Snyder on September 4, 1971. To this union two sons were born, Jason Eugene and Justin Lynn Shanholtzer. Max and Gail lived their whole lives in Shelbyville, IL.

He is survived by his wife, Gail; sons, Jason (Shirley) Shanholtzer of Tower Hill, IL, Justin Shanholtzer of Miami Beach, FL; granddaughter, Jasey Lynn Shanholtzer “Papa’s Baby Girl”; step-grandchildren, Hilary (Christian) Bothwell, and Charlie Shuff; step-great grandchildren, Piper and Emma Bothwell; step-sisters, Leslie (Ed) Green of Nashville, IN and Paula (John) Fullager of Jupiter, FL; sisters-in-law, Pat Leehart of Shelbyville, IL and Carolyn Hardy of Greenfield, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Clarellen Shanholtzer; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carroll and June (Powell) Snyder; step-father-in-law, John Rupp; brothers-in-law, Butch Foutch and Bob Hardy; and very special aunt, Opal Hanley.
