Christine Compton, 74, of Pana, IL, passed away at 4:18 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL, with Rev. Antonio Sutton officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2024.  in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.

Christine was born on November 12, 1949, in Shelbyville, IL, the daughter of James Frederick and Lydia Jane (Morris) Schouten. She graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1967 and completed her nurses training in St. Louis, MO.  Christine was a registered nurse at Shelby Memorial Hospital, where she worked alongside her mother, Lydia, taking care of babies. Christine married Rev. Thomas Compton on August 7, 1971, in Shelbyville, IL.  She then worked as a Teacher’s Aide in Special Education at Coffeen Elementary School and Taylorville High School.  Christine was a devoted mother, grandmother, and pastor’s wife as their family served churches in White Hall, Jacksonville, Hillsboro, Assumption, and Findlay. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts, and activities.  Christine loved music and was an extremely talented and creative seamstress.

Christine is survived by her sons, Kurt Compton (Tiffney) of Witt, IL and Karl Compton (Carly) of Findlay, IL; daughter, Kendra Finley (Chris) of Ramsey, IL; brothers, J. Fred Schouten II (Debra) of Celebration, FL, and John C. Schouten of Benton, AR; father-in-law, Frank Compton of Shelbyville, IL; brothers-in-law, David Compton (June) of Tower Hill, IL, Charles “Chuck” Compton (Kathy) of Shelbyville, IL, and Steve Compton (Carol) of Shelbyville, IL; eight grandchildren, Vanessa Compton, Sierra Compton, Alexa Compton, Wyatt Daniels, Lilly Compton, Melody Finley, Gabriel Finley, and Thomas Finley; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rev. Thomas Compton on December 3, 2018; mother-in-law, Juanita Compton; and sister-in-law, Beth Schouten.
