Gary J. Herzog

Gary Joe Herzog, 86, of Findlay, IL, passed away at 11:43 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

A private family graveside service will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Findlay Cemetery, Findlay, IL, with Pastor Richard Hargrave officiating. Arrangements are by Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to Findlay Christian Church or Findlay Ambulance Service and mailed to Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, 415 North Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565.

Gary was born on September 18, 1937, at home in Palmer, IL, the son of Roy and Lillian (Polston) Herzog. He graduated from Morrisonville High School in the Class of 1956 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Illinois University in 1960. Gary married Janice Faye Cundall on August 10, 1963, at Indian Point Church in Athens, IL. Gary taught P.E and Social Studies at Findlay Jr. High School and Driver’s Education at the high school for many years, retiring in 1992. “Coach Herzog” enjoyed coaching Jr. High Baseball, Track, and Basketball at Findlay. Gary also enjoyed working as a crop adjustor in the Crop Hail Department at Country Financial for forty years. He was a member of the Findlay Christian Church.

Gary is survived by his wife, Jan; daughter, Christie Blankenship and husband Kevin of Rochester, IL; son, Curt Herzog and wife Jayne of Findlay, IL, and Brian Herzog and wife Kandra of Beecher City, IL; seven grandchildren, Lindsay Blakley (Justin), Emily Gibbs (Matt), Colton Blankenship (fiancée Sara), Olivia Herzog (special friend, Max), Derek Herzog, Brittnay Jayne Yoder (Michael), and Walker Herzog (fiancée Debbie) and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James “Jim” Herzog and John Herzog.
