Alta R Holmes

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. Greg Breeden officiating. Visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Hubbartt Cemetery, near Beecher City, IL. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.
Alta was born on May 22, 1915 in Linden, Kansas, the daughter of Walter Seth and Ethel May Stewart Harrison. She was united in marriage to Charlie W. Holmes on November 21, 1933 in Colby, KS. They moved to Shelbyville, IL in 1936. She worked in several businesses in Shelbyville such as Ben Franklin Dime Store, Bi-Rite Grocery Store and retired from Johnston’s IGA Grocery Store. She volunteered with the RSVP organization and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville. Alta moved to Henderson, NV in 2002 to live with her daughter, Mary. In January 2013 she became a resident of Ameery Care Group Home in Henderson, NV.
Alta is survived by three daughters, Nellie Connelly (Edward, Sr.) of Ft. Myers, FL, Martha Dove of Hot Springs, SD and Mary Dunn (Frederick III) of Henderson, NV; one son, Charles Holmes, Sr. (Patricia) of Shelbyville, IL; daughter-in-law, Vicki Holmes of Effingham, IL; grandchildren, Edward Connelly, Jr. (Cheryl), Stephen Connelly (Linda), Michael Dove (Linda), Keith Dove (Leslie), Douglas Dove (Mary Anne), Kathleen Brown-Rice (Jeff Rice), Charles Holmes, Jr. (Barb), Brian Holmes (Keri), Bradley Holmes, Sr. (Tina), Mark Holmes (Melanie), Christine Kroniger Wachtel (Calvin), Clarence Holmes, Jr. (Lori), Jim Holmes (Terri), Sherri (Holmes) Morris and Robert Chapman; grandson-in-law, Joe Telford, sister-in-law, Lois Harrison of Grand Rapids, MN; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charlie W. Holmes; son, Clarence Holmes, Sr.; son-in-law, David Dove; three brothers; three sisters; granddaughter, Terri (Connelly) Telford; and grandson-in-law, Greg Morris.
