Carl L Childress

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Gallagher Chapel Cemetery, Fancher, IL. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
Carl was born on May 25, 1940 in rural Beecher City, IL, the son of Nelson Thomas and Allie Alvena Hopkins Childress. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1958. Carl worked as a meat cutter for Gene and Barney’s, Johnston’s IGA and Quality Market all in Shelbyville, IL. He then became a drug and alcohol counselor for the Hannibal Council in Hannibal, MO, where he worked for over 25 years. Carl enjoyed woodworking, fishing, mushroom hunting and gardening and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He married Ruthann Evans on January 3, 1959 and they had four children, Dennis, Karla, Sara and Rhonda.
He is survived by his children, Dennis Childress, Karla Goodwin (Mark), Sara Ballinger and Rhonda Rader all of Shelbyville, IL; brother, Roy Childress (Helen) of Shelbyville, IL; sisters, Nancy Jones of Shelbyville, IL and Phyllis Thomas (Oscar) of Stewardson, IL; grandchildren, Rachel Rose (Nick), Chanel Childress, Rachelle Childress, Charity Goodwin-Maurizio, Michael Goodwin, Christopher Jones (Amber), Chelsea Jones, David Rader (Micah) and Aaron Rader; and 15 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Alvena; and brothers-in-law, Don Price and Don Jones.
