A public graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2020 in Glenwood Cemetery (Section B), Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Greg Breeden officiating. The family will gather at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL, at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday and then drive in procession to the cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Shelby County Historical and Genealogical Society and mailed to Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, 415 N. Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565.
Carole was born on July 10, 1933 in Shelbyville, IL, the daughter of Claude and Pearl Lowary Smith. She graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1951 and later from Sparks Business College in Shelbyville, IL. Carole’s first job was as a receptionist for Dr. Duncan Biddlecomb. She later worked at the Circuit Clerk’s Office for Ralph Ulmer. Carole then worked as a claims adjuster for Country Companies Insurance Company, retiring in 1992 after 23 years. Carole’s favorite things were spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, doing genealogy, and traveling. She inherited the Smith family traits of loving her family, liking to cook and entertain, telling stories, and passing on the history of her ancestors through several published books. She married Delbert Ulmer on May 26, 1973 in Sullivan, IL.
She is survived by her husband, Delbert; loving brother, Mike Smith (Sue) of Shelbyville, IL; son, Michael Kirk of Sullivan, IL; daughters, Susan Durbin of Shelbyville, IL and Cheryl Williams (Allen) of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Traci Waltz (Stacy Collins) of Sullivan, IL, Adam Lesley (Leila) of Danville, IL, Michael Kirk (Marci) of Chicago, IL, Alyssa Scott (Jonathan) of Sullivan, IL, Erin Fricke (Tim) of Monticello, IL, Sara Schultz (Tony) of Shelbyville, IL and Stuart Durbin (Tara) of Shelbyville, IL; and great grandchildren, Zachary Harris and Shelby Jent, Madelyn Whitmore and Emma Scott, Macie and Dylan Fricke, Crosby Schultz and Owen and Shane Durbin. Although Carole always considered them her own, she is also survived by her step-sons, Brad Ulmer of Mode, IL and Mike Ulmer (Carol) of Shelbyville, IL; step-daughter-in-law, Myra Ulmer of Shelbyville, IL; step-grandchildren, Jamie Hammerschmidt (Jared) of Stewardson, IL, Heather Koester of Dieterich, IL, Tonya Wieneke (Mark) of New Palestine, IN, Travis Ulmer (Brooke) of Shelbyville, IL, Jeremiah Ulmer of Terre Haute, IN, Gregory Reynolds of Shelbyville, IL, Amanda Hale (David) of Landon, SC, Michael Reynolds (Rachel) of Tucson, AZ, Lacey Seaton (Garrett) of Taylorville, IL and Devin Ulmer of Shelbyville, IL; and step-great grandchildren, Lila and Henry Hammerschmidt, Colby and Kaylin Koester, Carter and Elizabeth Wieneke, Bryson and Austin Ulmer, Ryan, Haylee, Kaylee and Riley Reynolds, Dawson and Owen Hale, Rocco Reynolds, and Madalyn, Kinsley and Adler Seaton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-son, Scott Ulmer; and son-in-law, Roland Williams.
