Charles E. Lane, 73, of Shelbyville, died at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2010 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2010 in the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville with Rev. Lee Lovett officiating. Visitation from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday and from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Sunday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, Habitat for Humanity in Shelby County, Multiple Sclerosis Society or Shelby Co. 4-H Federation.

Mr. Lane was born on July 1, 1936 near Clarksburg, Illinois, the son of J. Paul and Lois Edith Barbee Lane. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1954 and the University of Illinois in 1958, where he was active in the R.O.T.C. program. Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960. When he returned, Charles taught high school agriculture in Catlin, IL in 1960 and Assumption, IL from 1961-1965. In 1965 he began working for the Shelby County State Bank in their farm department and later became the farm manager. Charles worked for the bank from 1965-2002 and was President of Shelby County State Bank at the time of his retirement. He served on the Board of Directors for Shelby County State Bank from 1976-2007. Charles was instrumental in establishing the Bank Steer Program with the Shelby County 4-H Federation. He began raising beef cattle and farming as a young boy with his father and enjoyed it all of his life. He bought cattle for Doverel Corporation and also served as the farm manager for the Bivard Corporation both in Shelbyville. Charles raised Quarter Horses, enjoyed team penning and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He also raised Mustangs, ponies and a miniature horse. Charles was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, where he served as a member of the trustees, finance committee and was active in the Wednesday evening bible study group. He was President of the Economic Development Council of Shelby County, Treasurer and Board Member of Habitat for Humanity in Shelby County, active in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and enjoyed attending the Corvette Festival in Effingham. Charles was an avid deer and bird hunter and a member of the NRA. He married Nancy K. Riley on November 2, 1958. She died on February 20, 2007.

Surviving are his daughter, Jill Lewis of Mode; grandchildren, Abbey Lowe, Maggie Lewis and Tracy Schwenker; great grandchildren, Trey Brummer and Jude Schwenker; brother, Bill Lane and wife Mary of Palm Bay, Florida; sisters, June Allen and husband Dave of Jacksonville, Judy Hubbard and husband Jon of Blue Mound and Mary Miller and husband Ray of Shelbyville; special helper, Jane Johnson and husband Bill and son Aaron of Shelbyville; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved pets, Nate and Sarah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy; and sisters, Norma Jean Lane and Joan Greenwood.

He was a very loyal, compassionate, devoted and honest man, who touched the lives of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
