Charlie R. Johnston, 72, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in HSHS St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2018 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Greg Breeden officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday and 10:00-11:00 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children or Prune Belly Syndrome.

Charlie was born on April 4, 1945 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Paul Jacob and Ruby Helen (Cutler) Johnston. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1963 and later from Lake Land College in Mattoon. Charlie worked as an electrician for over 50 years. He served on the Shelbyville City Council for eight years as Park Commissioner. Charlie loved doing things for people. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, IL. He married Phyllis Mary Smith on July 25, 1965.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Todd Johnston of Shelbyville, IL, Mark Johnston and wife Kim of Shelbyville, IL, Christina Keller and husband Scott of Shelbyville, IL and Chad Johnston and wife Amanda of Elsberry, MO; brother, Donald Johnston and wife Marilyn of Oconee, IL; grandchildren, Courtney Watton and husband Chad, Shelby Johnston, Kaylee Johnston, Jordan Johnston and wife Tasha, Danielle Keller, Keiffer Johnston, Chelsey Johnston, Rachel Keller, Payton Johnston, Hannah Johnston, Ruby Johnston and Quincy Johnston; and great grandchildren, Sophie Prowse, Mackandle Watton, Toby Tozier, and Mackoy Watton; mother-in-law, Mary Smith of Shelbyville, IL; sister-in-law, Ramona Shrake and husband Steve of Mattoon, IL and Joyce Johnston of Shelbyville, IL; sidekick, Tom Lynch of Dalton City, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene Johnston; and father-in-law, Harold Smith.
