Christy Jean Christner, 98, of Shelbyville, IL passed away at 6:57 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2020 in Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care Center.

Private family graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Ocotober 31, 2020 in Mt. Hermon Cemetery, near Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Randy Miller officiating and Darren Kennell as eulogist. Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project and mailed to Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, 415 N Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565.

Christy was born on May 15, 1922, in Corfu, NY, the son of Joseph Davis and Emma (Eigsti) Christner. Christy was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during World War II. He was a farmer and a self-employed carpenter. Christy later worked as a carpenter for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville. He was a member of the former Mt. Hermon Mennonite Church in Shelbyville, where he served as Bishop, and later attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Shelbyville. Christy enjoyed riding bikes, walking the Dacey Trail and spending time with his family. He married Ellen J. Eash on September 6, 1947, and she preceded him in death on March 1, 2020.

Christy is survived by his daughters, Sharon Chupp (Olen) of Goshen, IN, and Shirley Kennell of Shelbyville, IL; sons, John Christner of Shelbyville, IL, David Christner of Sarasota, FL, Kenneth Christner of Shelbyville, IL, and Dennis Christner (Deia) of Poland, ME; brother, Jake Christner of Roanoke, IL; sisters, Gloria Christner of Roanoke, IL, Barbara Hostettler (Ervin) of Roanoke, IL, and Emily Kennell of Sarasota, FL; 14 grandchildren, Christy Chupp (Martha) of Goshen, IN, Ellen Bontrager (Leon) of Middlebury, IN, Treva Olivero of Louisiana, Lamar Chupp (Brandi) of Bristol, IN, Mark Kennell (Karen) of Rogersville, MO, Darren Kennell (Amber) of Mattoon, IL, Harlan Kennell (Danielle) of Coal City, IL, Kurt Kennell (Courtney) of Indian Trail, NC, Jacob Christner (Aimee) of Shelbyville, IL, Clayton Christner (Brittney) of St. Charles, MO, Joshua Christner of Ocala, FL, LaKretia Macias (Ray) of Morton, IL, Hayden Christner of Poland, ME, and Kaleb Christner of Poland, ME; 33 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ellen; grandson, Danny Kennell; and brothers, Joseph Christner, Jr. and Frank Christner; and sisters, Mary Christner, Lavina Miller, and Luella Zoss.
