Dale I Selstad
(June 07, 1936 – March 03, 2013)
No services will be held at this time. A memorial is planned for this summer. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the General Dacey Trail, where he enjoyed walking his dogs daily, or the American Cancer Society.
Dale was born on June 7th, 1936 in Emmons, Minnesota, the son of William and Ida (Ofstedal) Selstad. He married Lena Keebler on April 23, 1966 in Dayton, Ohio.
Dale was very proud of his time in the Air Force as a radar technician working on the F86 Saber Jet. Later he worked for NCR and Xerox, before starting his own company, Data Ribbon Exchange, where he worked until retirement. Dale was a man of many and varied interests, including playing pool, deer and dove hunting, fishing and crossword puzzles. He was an avid reader of non-fiction, especially books on WWII. He enjoyed speaking Norwegian every chance he had, sharing his Nordic heritage with his sons. But, what he loved doing the most was being a collector and enjoyed adding to his hobby, through many trips to antique shops and attending auctions.
Dale attended the University of Minnesota and was a life-long “Gopher”, but often rooted for the “Illini” – even against the “Gophers”. He liked watching Big Ten Football and Basketball. He enjoyed watching Shelbyville Basketball (especially in the championship years), Shelbyville Football and Girls Softball. When his sons were in school, you would find him engaged in his favorite pastime – watching his sons play tennis and giving them advice.
Dale had a very special relationship with his grandchildren, Graydon, Garrett and Avery Selstad. He enjoyed giving them gifts at every opportunity, which he called special surprises.
He is survived by his wife Lena; his two sons Eric Selstad (April) of Charleston and Tyler Selstad (Natalie) of West Hartford, Connecticut; grandchildren Graydon, Garrett and Avery Selstad, step-grandchildren Steven Lund of Champaign Jesse and Kayla Jenkins of Charleston; sister Joanne Trader of Kenner, Louisiana; and cousin Jean (Ade) Leonhardi of Sun City, Arizona.
Dale was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy and Thomas Selstad.
