Dale William Vogel, 86, of rural Neoga, formerly of Strasburg and Gays, Illinois, went to be with the Lord at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in his residence.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg, IL with Rev. Steven Becker officiating. Visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday both in the church. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Strasburg, IL with military rites by Strasburg American Legion Post #289. Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg, IL, Lake Mattoon Sailing Association or Strasburg American Legion Post #289. Memorials may be sent in care of Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, 415 N. Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565.

Mr. Vogel was born on October 5, 1926 in Strasburg, IL, the son of Martin and Nora Figge Vogel. Dale attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School, Strasburg High School and earned his GED in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952, where he was a radar operator. Dale began farming in 1953 and retired in 1997. He loved sailing and built his own Y-Flyer, “Orange Slice”, in 1963-1964. Dale was a member of the American Y-Flyer Yacht Racing Association since 1963, a charter member of Fleet 39 Lake Mattoon Sailing Association and sailed competitively for a number of years. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg. He served his church as an usher for six years, Sunday School Superintendent for eleven years, Evangelism Chairman for six years and co-taught the Willing Lutheran Workers Sunday School Class with Patsy Lenz for five years. He was a member of the Lake Mattoon Sailing Association, United States Sailing Association, Shelby County Farm Bureau – Prime Timers, Continuing EdVentures Steering Committee of Lake Land College from 2003-2007 and Strasburg American Legion Post #289. He married Virginia Lorraine Doehring on June 7, 1953.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters, Julie Birdwell and partner Jodi Birdwell of Urbana, IL and Diane Bakelaar and husband Peter of Neoga, IL; grandchildren, Keagan Bakelaar and wife Samantha, Rita Bakelaar, Evan Bakelaar and Wendy Bakelaar and Reuben Birdwell; brother, Donald Vogel and wife Betty of Strasburg, IL; brother-in-law, Don Doehring and wife Linda of Windsor, IL; and sister-in-law, Sharlene Bell and husband James of Blue Springs, MO.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nora in 1944; and father, Martin in 1974.
