Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2009 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Shelbyville with Father Don Wolford officiating. Visitation from 5:00-7:30 p.m. Thursday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Broken Wand Ceremony at 5:00 p.m. and Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Evans was born on September 21, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John Joseph and Anne Marie Feilen Evans. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He earned his Associates Degree in Respiratory Therapy. He was a Respiratory Therapist at Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville and then at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur for 27 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus both in Shelbyville. His hobby and passion was magic and he was widely known as “Big Dan the Magic Man”. He was a member of The Society of American Magicians and The Society of Christian Magicians. He married Carol Lynn Schroeder on July 24, 1976.
Surviving are his wife, Carol; son, John Evans of Kennett Square, PA; daughter, Katy Henkel and husband Marc of Champaign, IL; brothers, Keith Evans and wife Sue of Hoffman Estates, IL and Jack Evans and wife Mary of San Diego, CA; sister, Carol Wassberg and husband Kenneth of Alsip, IL; and grandchildren, Elise and Erin Henkel of Champaign, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
