Dean Woods , 89, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 1:28 a.m. Monday, September 25, 2023 in his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL, with Kevin Woods & Gary Duckett officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 and from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Sunday, both in the funeral home.  Casual attire is requested. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery, near Shelbyville, IL, with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to the Shelby County Honor Guard or St. Lebree Orphanage in Montana.

Dean was born on March 13, 1934 in Shelbyville, IL near Lithia Springs, the son of Ralph Dudley and Maude Williams Woods. He attended Dugout School and served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Dean was a homicide detective at the McHenry County Sheriff’s office until the time of his retirement. He also farmed and owned and operated Woods and Sons Excavating in Shelbyville.  He enjoyed buying and restoring old tractors and farm equipment. Dean was a member of the National & Illinois Sheriff’s Association, Universal Life Church, Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81 of Shelbyville, IL, and the NRA.

Dean is survived by his three sons, Ronald Dean Woods and wife Mari of Williston, VT, Billy Joe Woods of Shelbyville, IL, and Dale W. Woods of Reno, NV; half-sisters, Margaret Long and Dorothy Bly, both of Shelbyville, IL; sisters-in-law, Veda and Carol Woods, both of Shelbyville, IL.; eight grandchildren, Nicole, Jessica, Carmen, Jason, Amy, Vanessa, Bruce, and Jenny; and four great grandchildren, Cohen, Judah, Cadence, and Brielle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leonard (Eileen) Woods, Dale (Freda) Woods, Gene Woods and Kenneth Woods; sister, Barbara (Gene) Phelps; brother-in-law, Gregg Long; and step-mother, Velma Banasiewicz.
