Dennis Smart

A celebration of Denny’s life will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the V.F.W. in Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association or Saving Orphaned Animals in Shelbyville, IL. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL.
Denny was born on October 6, 1941 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Wilmer Roy and Mary Janice (Gibson) Smart. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1959 and attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Denny was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He owned and operated the City Package Liquor Store in Shelbyville for many years, and most recently worked in the sporting goods department at Walmart in Shelbyville. Denny was baptized in the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville and was a member of Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81 in Shelbyville. He enjoyed collecting coins and was an avid golfer and Cub fan. Denny married Fran Shuff on December 7, 1965.
He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Cheatam (Perry) of Richmond Heights, MO; grandson, Charlie Cheatham of Richmond Heights, MO; brother, Gib Smart (Alma) of Shelbyville, IL; and sisters, Sally Lash (Roger) of Findlay, IL and Barb Adams (Lon) of Gobles, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Janice Smart; and brother, Stephen “Steve” Smart.
