Don Sylvan Shasteen, 91, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away peacefully in his residence at 3:15 p.m. on May 25, 2018.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before service time on Wednesday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Shelby Christian Church, Shelbyville, IL.

Don was born on January 23, 1927 in Moultrie County, IL, the son of Millard Elmer and Daisy Ann Hawbaker Shasteen. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1945 and attended Eastern Illinois University. Don was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Army Security Agency. He married Joanne Ricks on August 7, 1949. They enjoyed almost 69 years of blissful marriage. Don was a State Farm Insurance Agent and later worked for A.E. Staley in Decatur, IL. In 1985, Don opened Select Interiors in Shelbyville, IL, where he worked until his retirement. Don attended Shelby Christian Church, where he was a past Elder and teacher. He was devoted to his church and also to his garden. Don enjoyed interacting with people and was well known and loved in the community. He was an avid fan of the Shelbyville Rams.

Don was known for his peaceful loving demeanor and his wisdom. He was a Godly man full of Christ’s love and he wanted to share that love with everyone. He didn’t just tell people about his faith; he lived his life emulating Jesus.

Don loved and valued his family. Spending time with his family was one of the greatest blessings that he had in his earthly life. He especially enjoyed taking family vacations and exploring God’s country with the people he loved most. Don loved every member in his family and he let each on them know how precious they were to him. Every family gathering began with him sharing a bible verse or story followed by a prayer in which he would thank God for the privilege of being with his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters, Deborah (Dan) Robbins of Mattoon, IL and Rebecca (Jim) Wells of Shelbyville, IL; son, Jerry (Debbie) Shasteen of Shelbyville, IL; grandchildren, Scarlet (Troy) Conley, Dusty (Tommy) Sanborn, Bryan (Brooke) Robbins, Quanett (Fred) Goff, Josh (Anntionette) Wells, Brock (Tiffany) Hancock, Matt (Stefanie Shanks) Shasteen and Cody Shasteen; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; special family friends, Jim and Marge Macari and Rachel Jasso; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Gail, Wayne, Cecil, Victor, Harold and Rex Shasteen.
