Dona Barkhurst

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013 in the First Church of the Nazarene, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Greg Breeden and Rev. Robert Turner officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00-1:30 p.m. Sunday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the First Church of the Nazarene or the American Cancer Society.
Dona was born on August 25, 1912 in Tower Hill, IL, the daughter of John and Nora Dilley Holbert. She graduated from Tower Hill High School in the Class of 1929. Dona was a homemaker and a Nurses’ Aide at Shelby Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville, where she was a pianist for many years. She married John B. Barkhurst on January 23, 1937 in Springfield, IL. He died on November 20, 1989.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Helton (Wayne) of Strasburg, IL, Karyn Maxey (Albert) of Lincoln, NE, Jean Landers (Jack) of Mt. Zion, IL and Debra Lynne of Peoria, IL; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; daughter, Nellie Jo Henson in 2005; son-in-law, Lloyd Henson; and brother, Harve Holbert.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Lincolnland for their care of our mother and a special thanks to Jessie and her staff at Hawthorne Inn for the outstanding care they gave our mother.
