J. Donald Hammond, 66, of Shelbyville, IL died at 10:40 a.m. Monday June 20, 2016 in his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2016 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the Upward Sports Program for Boys and Girls at the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville, IL.

Don was born on June 21, 1949 in Leslie, Arkansas, the son of Leonard L. and Lura Collins Hammond. He was a graduate of Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1968 and Lake Land College. He began working for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as an apprentice in the summers of 1966 and 1967. He then worked for Clark’s Mobil Service Station, Borg Warner in Decatur, Blaw-Knox in Mattoon and retired from Caterpillar in Decatur. Don was a charter member of the Shelbyville Jaycees, Cub Scout leader and coach for Shelbyville Boys Baseball. He was also involved in bringing the JFL Program to Shelbyville. He married Diana Ditzler on December 31, 1967.

He is survived by his wife, Diana; son, Chad Hammond of Shelbyville, IL; daughter, Robin Hammond of Shelbyville, IL; mother-in-law, Betty Ditzler of Shelbyville, IL; brothers, Mike Hammond (Lee) of Georgetown, TX, Jim Hammond of Decatur, IL, Bob Hammond (Karen) of Macon, IL, Ronn Hammond of Shelbyville, IL and Tom Hammond (Debbie) of Shelbyville, IL; sisters, LaVonne West of Mt. Zion, IL, Wendy “Wanda” Suey of Nashville, TN, Linda McConnell (Jerry) of Shelbyville, IL and Stella “Lois” Blickem (Vance) of Vancouver, WA; brother-in-law, Dennis Ditzler (Candi) of Shelbyville, IL; sister-in-law, Donna Bragg (Larry) of Shelbyville, IL; grandchildren, Cassi Cox (Brad) of Hillsboro, IL, Calvin Watson (Myah) of Shelbyville, IL, Caitlyn Watson of Shelbyville, IL, Cailee McCabe (Shane) of Shelbyville, IL, Destiny Griffith of Shelbyville, IL, Chandra Hammond of Shelbyville, IL, Kelsie Richardson (Drew) of Sullivan, IL and Dylan Turner of Marengo, IL; great grandchildren Dominik Morse, Adam and Nathaniel Cox, Cloe and Calvin Watson, Brayden Hubbard, Ryker Hoffman, Jacob and Jesseca Griffith, Jaxson Watson, Preston Davis, Kylie McCabe, Jazzlyn Lowe, Joshua Drone and Sadie Richardson; 31 nieces and nephews; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Clark Ditzler; brothers, Dennis and Edward Hammond; brother-in-law, Ed Suey; nephew, Warren “Jesse” Blickem; and great granddaughter, June Cox.
