Dorothy M Ramsey
(December 06, 1926 – January 09, 2010)

Dorothy M. Ramsey, 83, formerly of rural Findlay, passed away at the Hawthorne Inn in Shelbyville on January 9, 2010. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville and one hour before services on Tuesday. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Lynette DeAtley at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hubbartt Cemetery, near Beecher City. Memorials may be given to the Westervelt Christian Church, Fourth Street United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, or Quad-County Hospice.
Dorothy was born at home in rural Effingham County on December 6, 1926, the daughter of John and Mabel (Grabb) Huffer. She attended Holland Grade School, Beecher City High School and Westervelt High School, from which she graduated in 1945. She obtained a teaching certificate after attending Eastern Illinois University and taught at rural Liberty School and Westervelt School. Dorothy also earned a beautician license.
Dorothy married Everett Ramsey on April 17, 1949 in Westervelt and they lived the first several years of their marriage in the Chicago area. They returned to central Illinois in 1963 and raised their two children in the country northeast of Westervelt. Dorothy learned to play the piano as a girl and she was the pianist for several years at Westervelt Grace United Methodist Church.
Dorothy was a kind, sweet-hearted woman who greatly loved her family and friends and was beloved by all who knew her. She emulated the love and servitude of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She lived a simple life and worked diligently to care for her loved ones, despite suffering from chronic fatigue. She remained on the farm and cared for her ailing husband until her strength was exhausted.
Dorothy is survived by her son, John and wife Gail of Decatur, IL; daughter, Karen and life partner Cindy Weigel of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren: John Michael, Janna, Jared, Jason, Jordan and Jessica; five great-grandchildren; sister Susan Macklin of Shelbyville; sister-in-law Wilma Ramsey of Mt. Zion; “adopted” grandsons Corey and Chris Groves; companion Harold “Monk” Duggins; several nieces, nephews and their families.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one great-granddaughter, Zanie Rogers.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hawthorne Inn for their loving care of Dorothy during the last several months of her life. Thanks also to the staffs of Shelbyville Manor; Quad-County Hospice; Decatur Memorial Hospital; Dr. Addai and Dr. Eloy. Thanks to the Groves family and extended family members and friends for helping Dorothy and Everett during their final years on the farm.
Dorothy was a beautiful person in every sense of the word and she will be lovingly remembered and missed by her family and friends until they are reunited with her in Heavenly Father’s eternal kingdom.
