Earl Shumard, 89, of Stewardson, died at 1:20 p.m. Thursday, November 27, 2008 in Heartland Christian Village, Neoga, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2008 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Brother Wayne Polk officiating. Visitation from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery with military rites by the Wilbur Braughton American Legion Post #611 of Stewardson. Memorials may be given to South Second Street Church of Christ in Shelbyville or Stewardson Veterans’ Memorial.

Mr. Shumard was born on March 9, 1919 in Stewardson, Illinois, the son of Otis Earl and Gertie Mae Roley Shumard. He graduated from Stewardson High School in the Class of 1937 and was a U.S. Army Mess SGT during WW II. Earl farmed in the Stewardson area until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the South Second Street Church of Christ in Shelbyville, where he was an Elder for 27 years. He was also a member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau, Stewardson Lions Club and Wilbur Braughton American Legion Post #611 of Stewardson. He married Jeanne Smith on December 24, 1942 in Hilton Village, VA. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last December.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanne; sons, Larry Shumard and wife Diane of Charleston, Darrell Shumard of Stewardson, Roger Shumard and wife Robin of Stewardson, Rich Shumard and wife Joy of Stewardson and Scott Shumard and friend Peggy of Neoga; sister, Gail Boldt and husband Eugene of Stewardson; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
