Eleanor Fern Askins, 80, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 5:19 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 in Shelbyville Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2014 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Greg Breeden and Rev. Bob Turner officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Red Bank Cemetery, near Lakewood, IL. Memorials may be given to the Mode Camp or Save Our Chautauqua.

Eleanor was born on July 16, 1934 in Shelby County, IL, the daughter of Boyd and Vera Howe Pease. She graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1952. Eleanor married Gerald Elden Askins on September 15, 1956. She worked for Wagner’s Market, Selock’s 5 cents – $1.00 Store, Index, and Highland’s V & S Variety Store all in Shelbyville. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville, where she was active in the Sunday School program (teacher for 64 years), Women of the Word and Nazarene World Mission Society serving as president. She also served on the church board for many years and was a leader in the Senior Adult Ministries program of the church. In 1976, she was awarded the Sunday School Superintendent of the Year for the Illinois District.

She is survived by her son, Duane Askins and wife Cindy of Decatur, IL; brother, Lester Pease and wife Barbara of Louisville, KY; sisters, Naomi Gill and Delores Shuff and husband Raymond all of Shelbyville, IL; sister-in-law, Imogene Donnel of Findlay, IL; grandchildren, Tonya Askins and Tony Askins; step-grandchildren, Jon Foiles and Christy Minnis and husband Mark; step-great grandson, Kenneth Minnis; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald on January 16, 2004; brother, Noel Pease and wife Esta; and brother-in-law, Robert Gill.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff of Shelbyville Manor for their care and compassion.
