Ellis was born on June 12, 1922 in Jackson County, IL near Murphysboro, the son of Frank Jefferson and Jessie Mary (Butler) Mifflin. In his early years, he worked on the farm with his father in southern Illinois. He then served in the U.S. Navy and was a WW II veteran. Ellis married Agnes Marie Brewer on August 13, 1945 in Ava, IL. They moved to Illiopolis, IL and Ellis began working for DeKalb. There he was a foreman, working in the Poultry and Seed Corn Division. In 1974, they moved to Shelbyville, where Ellis was a lead operator at Continental Bondware. They lived in an A-Frame home near Lithia Spring for many years. In his retirement, Ellis purchased two weaving looms and made rugs that were sold all across the United States. He volunteered at Shelby County Community Services in Shelbyville, teaching others how to make rugs and later gave them one of his looms. He enjoyed fishing and raising rabbits and cherished his trip on the Honor Flight.
