Everett R Ramsey
(October 09, 1923 – December 19, 2008)

Everett R. Ramsey, 85, of rural Findlay, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2008 in Shelbyville Manor.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2008 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. Lynette DeAtley officiating. Visitation from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday and one hour before services Monday. Burial will be in Hubbartt Cemetery, near Beecher City, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to the Westervelt Christian Church, Fourth Street United Methodist Church of Shelbyville or Carle Hospital Hospice.
Everett was born on October 9, 1923 at home in rural Effingham County, IL, the son of Bryan and Mollie Cole Ramsey. At the age of 14 he left home and began working for area farmers as a field laborer. At the beginning of WW II he joined the U.S. Navy and fought in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Feland, the USS Wilkes Barre, and the USS West Virginia. After the war, he farmed near Chicago, worked as a molder in a foundry, and began welding at a small business in the Chicago area. He moved his family back to Central Illinois in 1963, where he was a welder for Caterpillar Tractor Company, retiring in 1987.
Everett was a very strong, self-reliant man and he prided himself in his ability to find a solution for any problem. Among his many talents, he was a skilled carpenter, mechanic, farmer, and welder. There were few men who could keep up with the pace he set when he was working. He had an ornery sense of humor that was amusing to family and friends. Everett married Dorothy M. Huffer on April 17, 1949 in Westervelt, IL.
Everett is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy; son, John Ramsey and wife Gail of Decatur, IL; daughter, Karen Ramsey and life partner Cindy Weigel of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren, John Michael, Janna, Jared, Jason, Jordan and Jessica; five great grandchildren; step-mother, Trixie Ramsey of Moberly, MO; two sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clay, Charles and Carl Ramsey; one sister, Ora Mae Taylor; one half-brother, Elmer Kessler; one half-sister, Freda Turpin; and one great granddaughter, Zanie Rogers.
Special thanks to Carle Hospital Hospice and the nurses and staff at Shelbyville Manor for helping care for Everett. Also special thanks to “adopted” grandsons, Corey and Chris Groves, and Lorn and Marsha Groves for their loving care of both Everett and Dorothy. Thank you extended family members and friends who faithfully kept in contact with Everett and Dorothy and assisted them with their needs on the farm.
Everett will be remembered as a man who came from a difficult childhood and became a caring husband and father. He was always willing to help a friend or family member in need. He showed his love to his family by the many things he did to make their lives better. He will be greatly missed.
