Gail L. Smith, 96, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 6:06 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2014 in Shelbyville Manor.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Monday, October 6, 2014 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Kevin Ray officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00-Noon on Monday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or American Lyme Disease Foundation.

Gail was born on May 20, 1918 in rural Findlay, IL, the daughter of Oscar and Vera Morris Roney. She graduated from Findlay High School in the Class of 1936. As a young adult, she enjoyed participating in the Rural Youth program in Shelby County. Gail worked in the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office in Shelbyville. She married Daniel A. Smith, Jr. on October 19, 1941. Gail was a dedicated farm wife and mother, always maintaining a large garden and flock of chickens. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Shelbyville.

She is survived by her son, Morris Smith and wife Nanci of Bonita Springs, FL; daughters, Brenda Smith of Palo Alto, CA, Arlene Lamb and husband Jeff of Decatur, IL and Louann Short and husband Dale of Shelbyville, IL; sisters, Doris Bowers of Decatur, IL and Vera Lu Jeffers of Decatur, IL; six grandchildren, Stacy Pfeiffer and husband Dr. Jeff of Decatur, IL, Alison Hopkins and husband David of Clermont, FL, Tricia Wiegner and husband Mitch of Normal, IL, Greg Lamb and wife Karen of Decatur, IL, Brian Short and wife Elizabeth of Effingham, IL and Ben Short and wife Suzanne of Decatur, IL; and great grandchildren, Abby and Ally Pfeiffer of Decatur, IL, Nick and Cate Hopkins of Clermont, FL, Mason and Jackson Wiegner of Normal, IL, Drew and Blake Lamb of Decatur, IL, Brock and Brianne Short of Effingham, IL and Eleanor and Everett Short of Decatur, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Daniel A. Smith, Jr. on February 8, 2006; brothers, Leo and Lute Roney; and sisters, Avis Brent and Mary Alice Welsch.
