George R Young
(October 23, 1943 – November 27, 2018)
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2018 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Pastor Thomas M. Jones officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Foundation or Alzheimer’s Association.
George was born on October 23, 1943 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Robert C. and Juanita (Page) Young. He attended school in Shelbyville and graduated from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, KS, in the Class of 1961. George went on to Southern Illinois University, Carbondale to earn a Liberal Arts and Sciences Degree in 1966. George was a high school advanced biology teacher at Paxton High School from 1966-1990 and Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School from 1990-1995. One of his greatest loves was coaching the girls basketball team and leading them to many victories, including two trips to the Assembly Hall. He later worked for the University of Illinois Extension in Ford – Iroquois Counties, from 1998-2001. George was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. He enjoyed raising show cattle and was a member of the Illinois Angus Association and the National Simmental Association. George married Linda S. Pfeiffer on September 5, 1964.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of Shelbyville, IL; daughter, Tara R. Schanks (Donny) of Shelbyville, IL; twin grandsons, Tayler R. and Tyler R. Schanks both of Shelbyville, IL; sister-in-law, Judy Ground (Gary) of Chatham, IL; and nephew, Jason Ground (Jackie) of Chatham, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Juanita Young.
