Gerold Sporleder
(December 19, 1923 – August 16, 2011)
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg with Rev. Steven Becker officiating. A family committal service will be held in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Strasburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Paul’s Cemetery Fund. Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Strasburg is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sporleder was born on December 19, 1923 in Bethany, IL, the son of Joe Lester and Effie Fern Hudson Sporleder. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II. Gerold began working as a mechanic for Tom West in Sullivan, IL and then co-owned the Mobil Service Station in Sullivan with Ernie Hutchcraft. Gerold later owned and operated the Sunoco Service Station in Strasburg, IL and served on the Strasburg Village Board for many years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg. He married Doris E. Schlechte on July 2, 1946. She died on June 4, 1974. He married Rosemary Cowger Houchin on August 22, 1976.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemary; sons, Darrell Sporleder of Stewardson, IL and Ronald, Gary and Bob (Jennifer) Sporleder all of Strasburg, IL; grandchildren, Dana (Youcef) Saifi of Altamont, IL and Ryan Sporleder of Effingham, IL; step-grandson, Dalton Shadwell of Strasburg, IL; great grandson, Zander Sporleder of Effingham, IL; step-sons, Doug (Chris) Houchin of Taylorville, IL, Bert (Kelly) Houchin of Plymouth, IN and Don (Marla) Houchin of Lawrenceville, GA; step-daughter, Tonia (Bob) Mattox of Mattoon, IL; step-grandchildren, Angel Mattox of Mattoon, IL, Eric (Rachel) Mattox of Mattoon, IL, Brittne (Chad) Jensen of Normal, IL, Courtney (David) Thomas of Taylorville, IL, Ashley (Josh) Van Vactor of Plymouth, IN and Erin Houchin of Lawrenceville, GA; step great-grandchildren, McKenna Anderson of Taylorville, IL, Jaden and Brylen Van Vactor both of Plymouth, IN and Alex Katz of Mattoon, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Doris; infant brother, Donald Sporleder; sister, Erma Marie Norris; and infant granddaughter, Lana Sporleder.
