Ginger S Durbin

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2015 in the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville with Rev. Richard Coen and Rev. Linda Trent officiating.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville and one hour before service time Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church or Shelbyville Boy Scout Troop #51.

Ginger was born on August 14, 1960 in Mattoon, IL to Roy Edwin and Marilyn Joyce Scott Walk.

A graduate of Neoga High School (class of 1978), Ginger went on to receive her Bachelor of Science from Eastern Illinois University (class of 1982) and earned her degree in Education. Fueled by her passion for physics and chemistry, Ginger went on to teach at Bethany High School (1982-1986) and Shelbyville High School (2000-2007). Her commitment to her students extended beyond the classroom, where she also dedicated herself as a coach to students competing in the Worldwide Youth Science and Engineering Academic Challenge (WYSE). Ginger took great pride in her students’ achievements, leading the team to compete at the state level.

Ginger’s passion for teaching was second to her love and commitment to her family. On November 24, 1984, Ginger married Larry E. Durbin. For the next 30 years, Ginger and Larry built a business, a home and a family. A devoted mother, Ginger went out of her way to care for their three children, Blake, Amanda and Matthew; always pushing them to excel and always taking pride in their accomplishments. While raising three kids was no easy task, somehow Ginger also managed to keep the house in perfect order, inside and out.
One of Ginger’s many selfless acts was serving as a Boy Scout Troop leader for a number of years. Helping young scouts attain the rank of Eagle Scout brought her great joy.

Throughout the years, Ginger worked to surround their home with beautiful landscaping. She loved to be outside and work in the yard. Her hard work can be seen in the spring and summer when the flowers are in full bloom. Ginger spent time raising ducks in their pond, and they grew to love and depend on her, following her around the yard as she worked.

Ginger loved to cook, and during harvest season would spend all day working in the kitchen preparing food for the farmers. A simple meal would never suffice, as she was known for providing 5 course meals always complete with dessert. She was devoted to the farm, and even drove the combine when needed.

Ginger loved to spend time with her family, and especially enjoyed family game nights. She was always up for a game of cards or Pictionary, and always forgave Larry for his inability to draw.
Ginger also had a passion for piano, and enjoyed playing piano for weddings when asked and for worship services at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; sons, Blake Richard Durbin of Shelbyville, IL and his fiancée Abby and Matthew Edwin Durbin of Shelbyville, IL; daughter Amanda Suzanne Durbin of Champaign, IL; parents, Roy and Marilyn Walk of Neoga, IL; sister Penny Denise Butts and husband Robert of Decatur, IL; brother in law Terry Durbin and wife Laurie of Dallas, TX; mother-in-law, Eileen Cooper of Shelbyville, IL; nephews Nick, Andrew, Gavin, and Connor Butts of Decatur, IL and Jackson and Ryan Durbin of Dallas, TX.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Logan and Hazel Scott, and Raymond and Velva Walk.
Ginger’s love and support for her family was unending. She will be missed dearly and never forgotten.
