Glen Olen Spannagel . 87, of Strasburg, IL, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Monday, January 24, 2022 in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, IL, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 29, 2022 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg, IL with Rev. Kene Whybrew officiating.  Visitation will be from 4:00-7:30 pm Friday in the church.  Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Strasburg, IL with military rites by the Strasburg American Legion Post #289.  Memorials may be given to the Strasburg Veterans Memorial, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, or Strasburg American Legion Post #289.  Please follow COVID protocols.

Glen was born on May 3, 1934 in Ash Grove Twp., near Strasburg, IL, the son of Edward Loise and Mildred Grace (Huffmaster) Spannagel.  He attended St. Paul Lutheran School and was confirmed in 1948 by Rev. Luck.  He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in the Class of 1952.  Glen served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  He married Betty Ruth Heinz on December 26, 1954.  She preceded him in death on September 18, 2012.  Glen was employed by Caterpillar Tractor Company from 1956-1989 as a planning processor and also farmed in the Strasburg area.  He was a Past Commander of the Strasburg American Legion Post #289 and organized and helped to design and build the Strasburg Veterans Memorial, dedicated in 2005. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg, IL, I and I Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Club and the East Central Illinois Two-Cylinder Club.   He was an avid bird hunter and a member of Pheasants Forever and Quail Unlimited.

He is survived by his son, Steven Glen Spannagel (“Dee”) of  Shelbyville, IL; daughter, Carol Sue Salazar (Troy) of Shelbyville, IL; granddaughter, Andrea Spannagel of Mattoon, IL; step-grandchildren, Tara Blank (Neil) of Wisconsin and Troy Salazar, Jr. (Lauren) of Wisconsin; great grandchildren, Hayden Blank, Jailyn Blank and Arianna Ruth Salazar all of Wisconsin; sisters, Ruth Kohnert (Bob) of Effingham, IL and Donna Schultz (Larry) of Stewardson, IL; brother-in-law, Chuck Heinz (Caroline) of Arizona; sisters-in-law, Connie Wirth (Wayne) and Wilma Spannagel all of Strasburg, IL; special friend, Bee; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; infant brother, Clarence John Spannagel; brother, Lloyd Ray Spannagel; and sister, Grace L. Knop (Kenneth).
