Gregg D. Long

Gregg Dee Long , 58, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 9:02 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2023 in his residence.

Gregg was born on November 14, 1964, in Carthage, IL, the son of Dannie Gene and Imogene “Jean” Fern (Wilson) Long. Gregg served in the United States Navy for six years, serving on the USS Nimitz during Operation Desert Storm.  He married Margaret A. Woods on November 4, 1994. Gregg was a carpenter and owned and operated Long Construction in Shelbyville.  He previously worked for Vahling Building Company in Mattoon, Lee Slater in Windsor, and Home Depot in Mattoon.  Gregg enjoyed listening to music and working on the farm. He was a member of VFW Post 4325 of Mattoon, IL.

Gregg is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Jessica Hughes of Port Orchard, WA, Hannah Hart of Port Orchard, WA, Mallory Acosta of Virginia; step-sons, Eric Spencer (Colleen) of Cumberland City, TN, and Stuart Spencer of Windsor, IL; brothers, Tommie Long (Susan) of Carthage, IL; sisters, Carla Beck of Altamont, IL, Kristie Metro of Florida, and Jeri Jordan (Chuck) of Jacksonville, IL; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dannie Long; mother, Jean Nutt; step-fathers, Roger Teel and Jerry Nutt; maternal grandparents, Harlan and Fern Wilson; paternal grandfather, Levin Long; brother-in-law, Mickey Beck; mother-in-law, Velma Woods Banasiewicz; father-in-law, Paul Banasiewicz; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved dog, Madeline.

In keeping with Gregg’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. Arrangements are by Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shelby County Honor Guard and mailed to Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, 415 North Broadway, Shelbyville, IL.
