Harold Louis “Short” McKittrick, 87, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2013 in Shelby Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2013 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. Greg Breeden officiating. Visitation from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, near Shelbyville, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Mr. McKittrick was born on August 2, 1925 in rural Shelbyville, IL, the son of Lloyd Dewey and Edith Belle Goddard McKittrick. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He returned from the service and began working as a guard for the Joliet Prison. He was called back into the Army and served in the Korean War for a second time. Short worked for the Oliver Corporation in Shelbyville where he served as Union President for several years. He later was employed by the State of Illinois Department of Conservation, as the Site Superintendent for Eagle and Wolf Creek State Parks, until his retirement in 1990. He was also a lifelong farmer, retiring in 1983 from farming. Short was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed playing softball and was a talented pitcher. He was a selfless person and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren how to enjoy the outdoors through nature and sports. Short was a fan of Fighting Illini Basketball and St. Louis Cardinals Baseball. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Shelbyville and the Windsor Gun Club. He married Maureen Summers on December 24, 1951.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen; sons, Stuart McKittrick of Decatur and Troy McKittrick of Shelbyville; daughters, Jill Bauer and husband Dale, Jr. of Taylorville and Jody Fleshner and husband Tom of Shelbyville; brother, Russell McKittrick of Shelbyville; eight grandchildren, Ashley McKittrick, Josh McKittrick, Jered “Brock” Bauer and wife Beth, Bryan Bauer and wife Becky, Mauree Bauer and fiancé Brent Priest, Morgan Fleshner and wife Robbi, Makenzie Erwin and husband Chris and Dalton McKittrick; and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Margaret McKittrick; sister-in-law, Betty McKittrick; and two great grandchildren.
