Hazel was born on August 9, 1928 in Shelby County, Illinois, the daughter of Orville and Ruby Price Eversole. She married Merlin McDonald on September 28, 1946. They built a beautiful life raising three children, running a farming operation, and becoming foster parents during their 31 years of marriage. Merlin went to be with Jesus on March 24, 1977. Hazel was blessed to find love again when she married Kenneth Rueff on June 26, 1979. They shared the joy of their two families until Kenneth went to be with the Lord on December 4, 2001.

Hazel loved children. She was a foster parent to at-risk children for several years, raised her own babies, and operated an in-home daycare after her children were raised. She was beloved by her grandchildren for her spontaneity, creativity, and sense of humor. She supported missions around the world, had a heart for orphans, and loved gospel music.

She leaves behind a son, Jim McDonald and wife Jacque of Shelbyville, IL; daughters, Kathy Reeves and husband Roger of Hillsboro, IL and Ginny Kater and husband Dave of Quincy, IL; step-daughter, Linda Glick of Shelbyville, IL; two grandchildren, Jill McDonald Winslow and husband Rodney and Jeff McDonald and wife Vanessa; as well as five great grandchildren. She also leaves a sister, Carolyn Aspling and husband LaVerne of Galesburg, IL; sisters-in-law, Norma Eversole and Ermajean Eversole both of Shelbyville, IL; brother-in-law, Ted Drake of Springfield, IL; friend, Charlie Howell of Herrick, IL; and many other wonderful relatives and friends.
