As a young boy, he attended Red Fox School and was no stranger to hard work. Howard was always helping his father with all the chores, taking care of livestock and working in the fields. At about age eighteen, he traveled to Detroit, MI with the hopes of becoming a tool and die maker, which he did. He married and started his family there. He worked for the Oliver Corporation in Shelbyville, General Electric in Decatur and Mt. Zion Tool and Die. In 1960, he and good friends, Joe Young and George Harvey, started Shelby Tool and Die. After his partners retired, Howard continued the business with his son, Howard Ray. Never giving up his roots, he continued on as a farmer. Howard loved his family, his horses and his dog. He helped a lot of people and made many friends in Tennessee and Arizona. He was affiliated with the First Church of the Nazarene of Shelbyville, IL. Howard was dearly loved by his family. He married Vallie Smith on May 10, 1941. She died on November 11, 1985. On July 14, 1990, he married Donna D. Brown Himes.
