Irene Day

Funeral services will be held at the Howe & Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville, IL at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 9, with visitation scheduled for 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens near Villa Ridge IL, with a committal service at the cemetery at 3:00 PM Monday. Memorials may be given to Quad-County Hospice, Pana IL or Fellowship Baptist Church in Shelbyville, IL.

Irene was born February 13, 1920, the daughter of Leroy Watkins and Mary Susan Strawbridge Watkins. She married William Herbert Day, Jr., February 4, 1939, in Charleston, MO. He preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Day was also preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Roy Day.

Mr. and Mrs. Day lived in Southern Illinois until they moved to Decatur, IL, in 1967. Mrs. Day retired from J. C. Penney’s at Forsyth Mall in 1982 and moved to Shelbyville where she worked at Ace Hardware until age 82. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Shelbyville, IL.

Mrs. Day is survived by a daughter, Mary Sue Defend (Len) of Shelbyville, IL, and a son, Dr. Jerry Day (Angie) of Paducah, KY. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Dan Defend (Virginia) of Monticello, IL, Mike Defend of Effingham, IL, Alison Putney (Bob) of Paducah, KY, and Jeremy Day (Christy) of Ripon, WI; eight great-grandchildren, Eric Defend, Evan Defend, Emily Defend, Alesha Defend, Brittany Simms, John Putney, Andrew Day and Rebekah Day; and four great, great grandchildren, Audriana Defend, Isaac Defend, Brielle Buxton and Lainey Simms.
