Jack Leland Phillips, 83 of Shelbyville, IL, died at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014 in his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2014 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Mr. Phillips was born on May 9, 1930 in Nokomis, IL, the son of Arthur R. and Freda Josephine LeMay Phillips. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1948. Jack was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and received the Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Service Stars. He was a tool and die maker for the Oliver Corporation in Shelbyville, where he worked for 22 years. Jack then served as a Sheriff’s Deputy in Shelby County. He later worked as a millwright in the Newton Power Plant and retired from the Clinton Power Plant. Jack was a member of Millwright Local Union 1051 United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Lincoln, IL. He was a former member of the Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post and VFW Post #4829 both in Shelbyville. Jack enjoyed hunting, bowling and playing fast pitch softball in his younger days. Later in life his hobbies included traveling, spending time in Florida, golfing and going to the Shed with his friends. He also enjoyed his dog, “Cujo”. He married Genevieve L. Schloz on September 30, 1950. She died on December 29, 1989. He married Sandra Kay Bray on October 20, 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughters, Paula Spesard and husband Kent of Decatur, IL and Jacqueline Allen of Lindstrom, MN; son, Paul Phillips of Olive Branch, MS; sisters-in-law, Rose Phillips, Kathy Phillips and Barbara Barror all of Shelbyville, IL; grandchildren, Lindsey Bauerle and husband Beau of Champaign, IL, Evan Spesard and fiancée Elishwa of Phoenix, AZ, Travis Kelly of St. Louis, MO, and Jonathan, Antonia, Jacob and Jenna Phillips all of Olive Branch, MS; great grandchildren, James Spesard, Layne Bauerle and Julie Davis; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Genevieve; son, Jack Edward Phillips; and brothers, Edward F. “Ed” Phillips and Ronald B. “Blandy” Phillips.
