James Deron “Jamie” Sims, 47, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2019 in Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Christ Tabernacle Church, Herrick, IL, with Bishop Thomas Suey officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday in the church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Pana, IL with military rites by the Army National Guard and the Taylorville Correction Officers. Memorials may be given to the Sims Family College Fund. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL.

Jamie was born on July 24, 1971 in Olney, IL, the son of Clarence Dale and Sharon Lynn (Lewis) Sims. Jamie graduated from Mahomet High School in the class of 1989. He served in the United States Army and Army National Guard in Springfield, for a total of 24 years, retiring with the rank Sergeant in October of 2016. Jamie visited 5 of the 7 continents while serving in the Army National Guard. He started out in infantry and then went to DINOS to trade his MOS to Photo-journalism. He received awards and special recognitions for many of his writings when with the Public Affairs Unit in Springfield. Jamie served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He worked as a Corrections Officer at the Taylorville Correctional Center. He was a member of Christ Tabernacle Church in Herrick. Jamie enjoyed weight lifting, and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and New England Patriots. He married Angela “Angie” Short on February 12, 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Angie of Shelbyville, IL; three children, Lauren Sims (fiancé, Blake Smith) of Bloomington, IL and Grant and Natalie Sims both of Shelbyville, IL; step-son, Connor McNeely-Short (JoEllen Mars) of Shelbyville, IL; parents, Dale and Sharon Sims of Pana, IL; mother-in-law, Deborah Short of Shelbyville, IL; grandmother, Marjorie Lewis of Bedford, IN; sisters, Andrea Soto (Andy) of Hortonville, WI, Lynette Roberts (Jeremy) of Montgomery, IL, Suzette Lindsey (Tim) of Valdosta, GA; brothers Doug Sims (Haley) of Westfield, IN, Chris Sims (Angie) of Boise, ID, Jonathan Sims (Irma) of Appleton, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Howard W. and Geneva Sims; maternal grandfather David Lewis; father-in-law, Thomas W. Short; and nephew, Andrew Sims.
