John W Radloff

John W. Radloff, 86, of Strasburg, IL, died at 4:53 a.m. Saturday, December 24, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg, IL with Rev. Steven Becker officiating. Visitation from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before services Wednesday both in the church. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Strasburg, IL. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg, IL. Memorials may be given to the Stewardson-Strasburg Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) for the speaking system at the high school.

Mr. Radloff was born, one of five children, to Glen and Zepha (Hagerman) Radloff in Shelby County, IL, on November 13, 1925. He attended and was baptized at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, near Shelbyville, IL. John attended West Salem Elementary School and graduated from Strasburg High School in 1943.

John later joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg. There he married Ramona Schlechte in 1948 with Pastor Gilmore Lueck officiating. John was a farmer and then in 1955 he graduated from Barber College in Decatur, IL. He went on to own and operate a barbershop in Strasburg for 15 years. He farmed for many years and also drove the school bus for Stew-Stras Schools for 23 years. He loved working with young people, and they loved him as well. John was awarded the Stewardson-Strasburg Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 2002.

Throughout his life John had many interests. He was an avid sports fan and coached little league through American Legion baseball. He was one of the original organizers of the Strasburg ball diamond as well as the Strasburg softball team. John umpired softball games and refereed basketball games. He once refereed a local game with the Harlem Globe Trotters. John loved to hunt and was locally famous for his mushroom hunting abilities. He also loved square dancing.

John is survived by his wife, Ramona; two sons, John Elwin (Judy) Radloff of Strasburg, IL and Randall Warren (Darlene) Radloff of Danville, IL; grandchildren, Caminda (Mark) Riggs of Palestine, IL, Ashley (Gabe) Solano of Valdosta, GA, Devin (Samantha) Radloff of Strasburg, IL, Tennille (Nick) Spence of Brownsburg, IN and Nicole (Ryan) Welty of Greencastle, IN; and great grandchildren: Madyson, Easton, and Maya Spence, Chase and Rider Lawhorn, Zachary Riggs, Jace and Jaiten Solano, and Tresten and Mason Radloff.

John is also survived by his two brothers, Kermit (Ruth) Radloff of Pharr, TX and Glen Radloff, Jr. of Mattoon, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Noberta Renshaw and Maxine Meyer.
