Juanita M. Kater, 90, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 10:25 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2016 in Shelbyville Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Kevin Ray officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, IL.

Mrs. Kater was born on March 1, 1926 in Shelby County, IL, the daughter of Bona and Martha (Askins) Smith. She attended Shelbyville High School. Juanita worked for Sears in Shelbyville and later for General Electric in Mattoon, IL, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, IL. Juanita was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed riding her bicycle and spending time with her family. She married Gordon K. Kater on November 23, 1979 in Shelbyville, IL.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon; son, John W. “Billy” Wakeland, Jr. and special friend Jileen of Shelbyville, IL; daughters, Nancy M. Pinkston and husband Don of Shelbyville, IL and Brenda S. McClain and husband Ron of Findlay, IL; sisters, Betty Hudson and husband Delmar of Cowden, IL and Wanda Pruitt of White Hall, IL; sister-in-law, Mildred Everett of Strasburg, IL; brother-in-law, Bernard Kater and wife Ruth of Pleasant Hope, MO; six grandchildren, Dawn Gee and husband Jim, Mendi Getz, Marci Frederick and husband Nate, Bubba McClain and wife Maranda, Matt McClain and wife Shelby and Brett Wakeland and wife Courtney; step-granddaughter, Teri Miller and husband Rod; 15 great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two step-great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James E. Smith and Darrell Richard Smith; and one sister, Maurine Robinson.
