A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at a later date in Myers Cemetery, Herrick, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Shelby County Relay for Life/American Cancer Society or Arthritis Foundation.
Karen was born on April 13, 1939 in Decatur, IL, the daughter of William Virgil and Delores Diamond Drew. She graduated from Danville High School. Karen earned her LPN in Little Rock, AR and her RN from Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL. Her nursing career includes working as an LPN at University Memorial Hospital in Little Rock, AR, a surgical nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur, IL, Emergency Room Supervisor at Shelby Memorial Hospital, Shelbyville, IL, Director of Nursing at Shelbyville Manor and a visiting nurse at Lincolnland Hospice at the time of her retirement. She married Roy F. Smith in March 5, 1970.
Karen enjoyed gardening, fishing, mushroom hunting, shopping, spending time with her grandchildren and traveling with her husband.
She is survived by her husband and best friend, Roy; sons, Danny Sloan and wife Deb of Windsor, IL, Steve Sloan and wife Brenda of Strasburg, IL, and Tim Sloan of Maiden, NC; daughter, Vickie Jayne and husband Mike of Newton, IL; step-son, Mark F. Smith and wife Heidi of Tower Hill, IL; brother, Raymond “Pete” Drew and wife Jean of Batesville, AR; three nephews; ten grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Deliah Ann Portwood Drew; one brother; one sister; and two grandchildren, Rachel J. Sloan and Jevon A. Sloan.
