Kenneth Norman Slifer, 84, of Mode, IL passed peacefully on Thursday, October 29th, 2020 at St. Johns Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2020 in Hubbartt Cemetery, near Beecher City, IL with Father Ery officiating and military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Association or the Shriner’s Hospital for Children and mailed to: Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, 415 North Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565.

Born the fourth child of Dick and Mildred (Smith) Slifer on March 14th, 1936, Kenneth spent a memorable childhood working hard and causing mischief. He married Helen (Cox) Slifer on January 7th, 1967. A U.S. Army veteran, husband, father, grandfather, and storyteller, he was often found in his woodshop tinkering on homemade chairs and canes. He brought joy to many with his mostly true tales of a life well lived. He could often be found chatting with strangers, and making new friends anywhere he went. He was deeply loved. He worked for the railroad, Oliver Corporation, Firestone, and in his retirement was driver for FS and Equity. Kenneth was a member of the Greenland Masonic Lodge #665 in Beecher City, IL and Ansar Shrine in Springfield, IL.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter, Lydia (Clarence Jr) Funneman of Effingham, IL; three granddaughters: Megan, Allison, and Kaitlyn Funneman. He is also survived by his siblings: Lila Miller of Monticello, IL, Jim Slifer of Beecher City, IL, Richard Slifer of Stewardson, IL, Paul (Mary) Slifer of Beecher City, IL, Wayne Slifer of Mode, IL, and Nancy (Jim) Mulcahy of Taylorville, IL; and his sisters-in-law, Bessie Slifer of Taylorville, IL and Nancy Slifer of Shelbyville, IL.

He is preceded in death by his son, Jacob Shannon Slifer, as well as by his parents; siblings: Ralph Slifer, Russell Slifer, Max Slifer, Sue Matheny; sister-in-laws, Karen Slifer, Pat Slifer and Jane Slifer; and brother-in-laws Ralph Miller and Don Matheny.
