Lillis June McCain, 95, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2015 in Shelbyville Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Shelbyville, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2015 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Roger Quarton officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany, IL. Memorials may be given to the Westervelt Christian Church or the Shelbyville Chautauqua Restoration Fund.

June was born on June 12, 1919, the daughter of Omer Calvin and Sarah Camilla Bone Sporleder, in Todds Point Twp., Shelby County, Illinois, less than a mile from the large railroad bridge built in 1917 over the Kaskaskia River.

She attended eight years in a one room school house and graduated from Bethany High School in 1937. She went on to attend “Teacher’s College” at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. June received a double Master’s Degree in Education in Greeley Colorado, in 1953. She taught five years in a one room school house and the rest in Shelbyville and Decatur, IL, for a total of 35 years of teaching. June married Julian L. McCain on April 11, 1959. They lived on a farm near Dalton City, IL until his passing in 1966. June was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Bethany, IL and attended Westervelt Christian Church, Westervelt, IL. She was a Charter Member of the Kuilka Chapter of the DAR and an active member for more than 60 years. She was a volunteer at the Shelby County Historical and Genealogical Society for 40 years, doing research for the county and individuals, which she enjoyed very much. June loved to read and did a lot of quilting. She had a heart for restoring the Chautauqua Building in Forest Park, Shelbyville, IL and put a lot of her time into it.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Lehman of Assumption, IL; ten nieces and nephews, Delores (Ron) Sloan of Pana, IL, Rosie (Gary) Shuck of Assumption, IL, Mary Ellen (Tim) Gillett of Moweaqua, IL, Phil (Mary) Lehman of Moweaqua, IL, Mike Lehman of Assumption, IL, Joe (Roberta) Lehman of Macon, IL, Janice (Bruce) Cooper of Glen Carbon, IL, Tammy (Dennis) Jungles of Freeport, IL, John (Brenda) Lehman of Decatur, IL and Kurt (Terry) Stretch of Mattoon, IL; 27 great nieces and nephews; 39 great great nieces and nephews; and 4 great great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Valeria Sporleder and Marie Stretch; brother, Hugh Sporleder; and one great great niece.
