Louis Amos Murphy , 85, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 7:08 p.m. Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital, Mattoon, IL.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, November 6, 2021 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Jim Allen officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 – noon, Saturday in the funeral home. Burial with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Blessings in a Backpack or Shelbyville Boys Baseball.

Louis was born on August 10, 1936 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Carl Randall and Lena C. (Zinn) Murphy. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1955. Louis served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1962. He married Carol M. Roley on April 12, 1959 and she preceded him in death on December 1, 2008. Louis started working for Gene and George Nance at the Marathon Station in Shelbyville.  He then worked for White’s Sheet Metal for thirty years and Macari’s Service Center for twelve years, both in Shelbyville, IL.  In his retirement, Louis was a crossing guard for Shelbyville Schools for many years. He served as Assistant Fire Chief to Jim Kerr, and later as Shelbyville Fire Chief for three years. He married Doris Scott Nichols on January 21, 2011. Louis was a member of Jackson Masonic Lodge #53, Shelby County Shrine Club and Findlay Baptist Church. Louis was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, and St. Mary’s Church near Findlay.

Louis is survived by his wife, Doris; daughter, Kendra Ross of Shelbyville, IL; son, Kent Murphy of Shelbyville, IL; step-daughters, Jamie Nickell (Bruce) of Bondville, IL and Lori Morse (Tim) of Shelbyville, IL; step-son, Chuck Farris (Lynne) of Belle, MO; four grandchildren, Kristin O’Brien (John), Kassie Pfeiffer (Jared), Rylan Murphy, and Layton Murphy; seven step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren, Jack, Max, Leah and Sebastian O’Brien and Kora and Kenley Pfeiffer; and four step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Carol; daughter, Lana Kay Murphy; son-in-law, Dennis Ross; brothers, Carl Murphy, Jr., John Murphy, William Murphy and Fred Murphy; sister, Sabina Thompson; and half-brother, Victor Zinn.
