Marie E Herdes

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. E. Wade Helmkamp officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Monday in the church. Casual attire is requested. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois or Shelbyville Booster Foundation.
Marie was born on June 10, 1947 in Effingham, IL, the daughter of Ivan and Lorene Miller Pickens. She grew up in Dieterich, IL and was the valedictorian of her high school class. Marie received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from Eastern Illinois University. She married Robert L. Herdes on August 17, 1969. Marie taught in the Windsor Junior High and High School for 34 years. There she also served as Cheerleading Sponsor and National Honor Society Advisor. Marie was a dedicated and supportive coach’s wife and a member of Sigma Kappa, National Education Association and Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where she was active in Ladies Auxiliary and the church choir.
Marie was a devoted wife, mother and Nana. She was a teacher and a giver and she taught her family how to love.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Heather Zebrowski and husband Jim of Woodbury, MN; sons, Kevin Herdes and wife Nicole of Evansville, IN and Dirk Herdes and wife Kim of Rogers, AR; brothers, Curtis Pickens of Wapakoneta, OH and Ed Pickens and wife Ginger of Dieterich, IL; sisters, Kay Jones and husband Ken of Collinsville, IL, Joan Higgins and husband Russ of Normal, IL, Peggy Ostermeier and husband Fred of Chatham, IL and Julie Holkenbrink and husband Frank of Carpentersville, IL; and seven grandchildren, Zach and Lauryn Zebrowski of Woodbury, MN, Blake, Brooke and Baylor Herdes of Evansville, IN and Ashley and Lexie Herdes of Rogers, AR.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and grandson, Ryan Zebrowski.
