Marjorie Marie Sylvester, 89, of Shelbyville, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, January 24, 2010 in Shelbyville Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2010 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. Jeff Grote officiating. Visitation from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. Friday. Private family graveside services will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville.

Mrs. Sylvester was born on February 13, 1920 in Shelby County, Illinois, the daughter of John Henry and Josephine Amanda Wheat Strohl. She was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II, serving in the WAC. She served as Shelbyville City Clerk from 1965 -1981 and Shelbyville Mayor from 1981-1985. She was a former President of the Illinois Municipal Clerks Associaition and Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Municipal League. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville and a 56 year member of Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81 of Shelbyville. She married Robert Carl Sylvester in 1950. He died on October 11, 2008.

Surviving are her son, Phillip Sylvester of Marion, IL; daughters, Kathy Lantz and husband Scott and Barb Holley and husband Jim all of Shelbyville, IL; brother, Phillip Strohl and wife Marjorie of Shelbyville, IL; brother-in-law, Keith Sylvester and wife Marietta of Charles City, IA; sister-in-law, Phyllis Strohl of Bement, IL; grandchildren, Jeff McClain and wife Michele of Fredericksburg, VA, Sarah Dicks of Raleigh, NC, Megan Lantz of Chicago, IL, Laurie Groves and husband Justin and Suzanne Clark and husband Todd all of Marion, IL, Matthew Holley of Indianapolis, IN and Mark Holley and fiancé Jamie Matt of Champaign, IL; great grandchildren, Jacob McClain and Elijah and Adam Millard all of Fredericksburg, VA, Ava and Ella Groves and Andrew Clark all of Marion, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; daughter, Patti Elizabeth; great grandson, Joshua Clark; brothers, Lloyd, Lawrence and John Strohl; and sisters, Rosetta Pranske, Esther Gains, Mary Henry and Virginia Strohl.
