Mary was born on August 10, 1920 in Frankfort, IN, the daughter of Russell and Dorothy (Roberts) Bonham. She graduated from Wiley High School in Terre Haute and Indiana State Teachers’ College; she later received a master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University. She married W.B. Hogge, “Jr.”, on May 1, 1943. She taught in Beecher City, Altamont, and Cowden schools. During WWII, she worked as a chemist at the Newport, IN, Chemical Plant. She was a co-owner of Hogge Lumber Co. in Beecher City and also worked at JC Penney in Effingham. Mary served as a 4-H leader, Liberty Township Trustee, Assessor, Election Judge, Secretary of the Effingham County Fair Board and was a Board member for Beecher City Schools. She was a member of Home Bureau, DAR, Effingham and Vandalia Duplicate Bridge Clubs, and the Beecher City Ruritan Club. She was a lifelong Democrat and a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mary was a gifted seamstress and knitter, a dog and sheep breeder, crossword puzzle enthusiast, and enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle. She loved fishing, camping, and music from the Big Band Era.
Fiercely independent and feisty, armed with her eagle eye stare, Mary embraced life to the fullest, deeply loving her family, friends, and students. Mary is survived by her two daughters, Ellen Kruse and husband, Dave of Shelbyville, IL, and Amy Hogge, MD, of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren, Nancy Kruse of St. Louis, MO, Ingrid Hogge of Cleveland, OH, and Bob Hogge, of Chicago, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
