Mary “Joan” Arthur , 91, of Findlay, IL, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2023 in Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL, with Rev. Mike Reynolds officiating.  Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday December 13, 2023 in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Joan was born on October 7, 1932 in Lakewood, IL, the daughter of Robert Lincoln & Bessie Mary (Christy) Cutler. She graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1951. Joan married Charles Eugene “Gene” Arthur on January 26, 1951 and he preceded her in death on August 7, 2002. In 1962, Joan, her husband, Gene, and sons began operating the Findlay Bi-Rite Grocery Store. She later worked at General Electric in Mattoon, IL, until the time of her retirement. Joan was a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking and baking.

Joan is survived by her sons, Gary Arthur (Nicki) of Findlay, IL, and Jerry Arthur (Penny) of Sullivan, IL; daughter, Gina Arthur (Frank Holley, Jr.) of Findlay, IL; daughter-in-law, Susan Arthur of Findlay, IL; sister, Eloise Robison of Shelbyville, IL;  13 grandchildren, Jerame Arthur, Avery Arthur, Rory Arthur (Savannah), Rhett Arthur, Brandon Arthur (Leah), Kris Arthur (Megan), Sarah Hart (Wes), Brittny Rhodes (John), Katie Coventry, Adam Isley (Jessica), Evan Isley (Kelsey), Shane Peace and Brett Peace; seven great grandchildren, Jackson Arthur, Stella Arthur, Laken Arthur, Addison Arthur, Benjamin Isley, Holly Isley, and Rowan Isley; and special family friends, Brenda Malcom and Mendy Campbell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; son, Larry Arthur on March 23, 2023; four brothers, William Cutler (Opal), Lindy Cutler, Russell Cutler (Jean), and James Cutler; two sisters, Ruby Johnston (Paul) and Opal Russell (Arnold); and brother-in-law, Jack Robison.
