Max E. Shanholtzer, Sr., 87, of Shelbyville, died at 3:45 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010 in Shelbyville Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 20, 2010 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. E. Wade Helmkamp officiating. Visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to American Heart Association.

Mr. Shanholtzer was born on April 19, 1923 east of Clarksburg, Illinois, the son of John Charles and Anna Mae Ritter Shanholtzer. Max lived in Shelby County before serving in the Army of the United States, Hq Btry 21st AAA Gp. He was inducted on Feb. 10, 1943 and entered active service on Feb. 17, 1943 at Scott Field, IL. His military occupational specialty was Truck Driver Light 345. He departed Feb. 10, 1944 for ETO and arrived Feb. 24, 1944. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He departed ETO on Nov. 19, 1945 and arrived in the United States on Nov. 27, 1945. His honorable discharge was given at the Separation Center at Camp Grant, IL on Dec. 3, 1945. Max’s decorations and citations were three Overseas Service Bars, American Campaign Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.

Max is survived by his son, Max E. Shanholtzer, Jr. (Gail) of Shelbyville; step-daughters, Leslie Green (Ed Maxedon) of Nashville, IN and Paula Fullager (John) of Sugar Grove, IL; grandsons, Nathan Green, Jason Shanholtzer (Shirley), Justin Shanholtzer, Jordan Maxedon and Julian Maxedon; great granddaughters, Jasey Shanholtzer and Hilary Shuff; his older sister, Opal Hanley of McLeansboro, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Leona (Harrington) Shanholtzer; and second wife, Clarellen (Selby) Shanholtzer.
