Nellie Joan Wemple, 77, of Palestine, Texas, formerly of Shelbyville, IL, died September 11, 2016, at Cartmell Home for the Aged, in Palestine, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 17, 2016 in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, 415 North Broadway, Shelbyville, Illinois 62565 with Rev. Greg Breeden officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery, east of Assumption, Illinois. The family request instead of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Joan was born on August 27, 1939 at St Mary’s Hospital Decatur, Illinois, Macon County to James Albert “Slim” Crum and Eloise June Jenkins Crum and raised by her Great Grandmother Julia May Jenkins. She attended school at Shelbyville through the 6th grade and the remainder at Windsor, Illinois until she graduated in 1957. She married Robert “Bob” Arthur Wemple August 27, 1961 at Henton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her five children, Pamela Jo Wemple Tull (Sam), Shelbyville, Illinois, James Arthur Wemple (Linda), Pana, Illinois, Jeffery Alan Wemple (Joan), Huntsville, Alabama, John Andrew Wemple, Palestine, Texas, and Beth Ann Wemple Hughes (Dave), Junction City, Kanas.

She has ten grand children, Joshua Tull, Christopher Tull, Kristen Wemple, Sarah Wemple Busken (Jake), Ryan Locke, Sean Locke, Zach Hughes, Jeremiah Hughes, Andrea Wemple and Samantha Wemple, and three great granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

She has two surviving sister Glenda M. Wortman Shelbyville, Il and Marilyn Whitlow (Don), Moweaqua, Ill.

Joan worked in the deli at Johnston’s IGA for many years and previously was a checker at the A & P Store, both in Shelbyville. She was a member of Westwood United Methodist Church Palestine, TX.

Her parents preceded her in death, along with husband, stepdaughter Julia Diana Wemple, sisters Nancy Jo Apple, Sandra Rickett and daughter Marla Kay Wemple.
