Paul Karraker, 73, of Shelbyville, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday December 20, 2011, at Shelbyville Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday December 23, 2011 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville, with Rev. Lee Lovett officiating. Visitation from 3-7 p.m. Thursday and one hour before service, Friday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in memorium to: The Shelby Memorial Hospital Foundation, the First United Methodist Church Community Food Pantry, and the Shelby Humane Society.
Paul was born February 02, 1938 in Herrin, Illinois the son of George William and Mary Pauline Hunsaker Karraker. He graduated from Jacksonville High School at Jacksonville, Illinois in 1955 and from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, Missouri in 1961. He married Sarah Goodman on October 14, 1961 at the First United Methodist Church in Grayville, Illinois.
He and Sarah moved to Shelbyville in November of 1961 to serve as the Registered Pharmacist at Dillow’s Drugstore. Throughout his career, his foremost concern was for the health of the families he served. Later, in 1980, Paul built Karex-Drug Store, a drive-up drug store on the west end of Shelbyville. He later sold Karex to the CVS drug store chain and was employed as a pharmacist by them. Most recently, Paul enjoyed being employed by Wal-Mart in Shelbyville.
Paul was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, the Questers’ Sunday School Class and loved singing in the Church Choir. He also loved participating in the Coles County Barbershop Chorus, Shelbyville Rotary Club and was a member of the Board of Directors of Shelby Memorial Hospital. In 2009, he received the Paul Harris Fellow award for longstanding service to Rotary International. His greatest love was watching and encouraging his grandchildren participate in sports and music. In October of this year, he and Sarah enjoyed celebrating their 50th Anniversary at a gathering with family and friends.
Paul loved his family, and is survived by his wife Sarah, his sons, Stephen (Janice), of Shelbyville, and Bill (Suzie) of Dallas, Texas, and his grandchildren: (Steve) Tyler of Sandy Utah, Elizabeth, Emily, Zachary, Jennifer, and Hannah of Shelbyville; (Bill) Adam, Celeste and Neil of Dallas Texas. Paul is also survived by his brother, Robert O. Karraker (Diane) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and was preceded in death by his parents; George William and Mary Pauline Karraker, and his sister Carolyn Moore.
