Pearl Joy Shaffer, 90, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2014 in her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 9, 2014 in the First United Methodist Church, Shelbyville, IL. At the conclusion of the service, the family will have a receiving line. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville or The Gideons International.

Pearl was born on June 9, 1924 in Shelby County, near Findlay, IL, the daughter of John O. and Hattie V. Giles Drake. She graduated from Findlay High School in 1941 and then attended Sparks Business College in Shelbyville. She married Dwane A. Shaffer on February 22, 1942 in the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville. In addition to being a farm wife and mother, Pearl was a great lover of poetry and books. She wrote several poems, some quite humorous. Pearl cooked for Rotary for many years and was known for her fried chicken, homemade rolls and homemade pies with crusts made with lard. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, United Methodist Women of the church and The Gideons International Auxiliary for nearly 30 years.

She is survived by her husband, Dwane; son, Jim Shaffer (Sandy) of Shelbyville, IL; daughters, Donna Worcester (Peter) of San Diego, CA and Carol Hurley of Shelbyville, IL; sister-in-law, Vivian Drake of Charlotte, SC; seven grandchildren, Mike Shaffer (Kathy) of Mattoon, IL, Steve Shaffer (Stacy) of Crystal Lake, IL, Christy Shaffer (Ryan Zumbahlen) of Indianapolis, IN, Matthew Worcester (Elizabeth) of Center Moriches, NY, Bryce Worcester (Aditi) of Austin, TX, Margaret Hurley (Cameron) of Urbana, IL and Andrew Hurley of Shelbyville, IL; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Cecil G. Drake, John H. Drake, Paul D. Drake and Warren O. Drake; and sisters, Dolores Reed and one in infancy.
