Phyllis K. Mitchell

Phyllis K. Mitchell , 87, of Shelbyville, IL, formerly of Pana, IL, passed away at 10:05 a.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2023 in HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital, Shelbyville, IL.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL, with Rev. Nathan Woolery officiating.  Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL.  Memorials may be given to the Shelby County Community Services for their Special Olympics Team and mailed to Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, 415 N. Broadway, Shelbyville, IL 62565. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL.

Phyllis was born on December 23, 1935 in Decatur, IL. She is the daughter of George Thomas “Tommy” and Evelyn Bunton Gardner.  She graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in the Class of 1953.  Phyllis was a lifelong learner and earned several Associates Degrees.  She attended Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Shelbyville and was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Pana, where she was active in their Bible study group.  Phyllis was an avid quilter and owned and operated a quilt store in Moweaqua.  She also enjoyed teaching quilting classes, doing cross stitch and knitting socks.  Phyllis married Jimmy O. Mitchell on September 1, 1959.

She is survived by her children, Debra (Dave) Gesser of Shelbyville, IL, Eric (Echo) Arnold of Singapore, James (Victoria) Mitchell of Moweaqua, IL and Bryan Mitchell of Shelbyville, IL; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tommy and Evelyn Gardner; and husband, Jimmy Mitchell on August 7, 2007.
